Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds

Lab-Grown vs Natural diamonds: Which One is Right for you?

If you are searching for the perfect diamond, whether for an engagement or wedding ring, wedding jewellery or a special gift, you’ve probably asked yourself: lab-grown or natural?

The truth is, there is no right or wrong choice – only the one that is right for you.

At Fennes Jewellery, we believe buying a diamond should be exciting, not overwhelming. That’s why we’re here to explain the differences in simple terms, so you can choose with confidence.

What is a natural diamond?

Natural diamonds formed 1-3 billion years ago deep within the Earth under extreme heat and pressure. They were brought closer to the Earth's surface by ancient volcanic eruptions, where they can eventually be mined.

Every natural diamond is unique, making it a remarkable symbol of nature's craftsmanship.

What is a lab-grown diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond that is created in a laboratory. It is produced using either High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) technology or Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD)  where the diamond grows layer by layer from carbon-rich gases inside a vacuum chamber.

The process takes just a few weeks, but the result is a genuine diamond with the same physical, chemical and optical properties as a natural diamond.

Do they look the same?

Yes. Both types of diamonds are beautiful. They have the same crystal structure and chemical composition, giving them the same brilliance, sparkle and hardness.

To the naked eye, they are virtually impossible to tell apart and can only be distinguished using specialised gemmological equipment.

Which One Holds its Value Better?

While lab-grown diamonds require advanced technology and expertise to produce, they can be created in response to demand. Natural diamonds, however, are limited by nature and took billions of years to form.

Because natural diamonds are rarer, they generally retain their value better over time. Lab-grown diamonds have become more affordable as production has increased.

It's worth remembering that neither natural nor lab-grown diamonds should be viewed as guaranteed investments. The best choice is the one that suits your priorities and budget.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose a natural diamond if:

  • You value its unique geological origin and history.
  • Long-term value retention is important to you.
  • You are buying an engagement ring or heirloom that you hope to pass down through generations.
  • Rarity and natural beauty matter to you.

Choose a lab-grown diamond if:

  • You want a larger or higher-quality diamond for your budget.
  • Resale value isn't a priority.
  • Your main focus is beauty, sparkle and value for money
