There are few purchases more meaningful than your wedding rings.
Long after the cake has been eaten and the flowers have faded, your wedding rings remain. They become part of your everyday life, a reminder of the commitment you made, your memories and the journey you are beginning together.
At Fennes Jewellery, we know choosing your wedding rings can feel exciting, but also a little overwhelming. With different metals, widths, finishes and styles available, it's not always easy to know where to start.
We’ve created this simple guide to help you get started. When you book your wedding ring consultation, we will guide you through the decisions and help you find the perfect rings for your special day.
Start Early
We always recommend beginning your wedding ring search at least 3 to 6 months before your wedding date.
This gives you plenty of time to explore different styles, have rings ordered or made, and make any adjustments if needed. It also allows you to enjoy the experience without feeling rushed.
Choosing the Right Shape
Classic Band Shape
A traditional straight wedding band is a timeless design, perfect if your engagement ring has a simple setting that allows a straight band to sit neatly against it.
Shaped Wedding Ring
If your engagement ring has a prominent setting or unique design, a shaped wedding ring is often a perfect choice. Designed with a gentle curve or contour, it fits snugly around your engagement ring to create a seamless, elegant look.
Bespoke Wedding Ring
For engagement rings that require a completely unique fit, a bespoke wedding ring is made especially for you. We carefully design the band to follow the exact contours to ensure a perfect fit to complement your engagement ring.
Choosing the Right Metals
One of the first decisions you'll make when choosing your wedding ring is selecting the metal. While style and personal preference are important, we often recommend starting by considering your engagement ring.
For many couples, choosing a wedding ring in the same metal as the engagement ring helps create a seamless look and can reduce wear over time. Different metals have different hardness levels, and rings that sit together every day can gradually wear against one another if they are made from materials with significantly different properties.
Of course, there are no strict rules. Some brides love the contemporary look of mixing metals, and this can create a beautiful and unique bridal set.
Gold
Yellow gold is the traditional choice for wedding rings. Both 9ct and 18ct gold offer that signature warmth, although the colour and durability vary slightly depending on the purity of the gold. We always recommend matching the metal of the wedding band with the engagement ring to avoid wear over time.
White gold is usually plated with rhodium to produce a beautiful white lustre. The white metal provides a lovely backdrop for diamonds. Rhodium plating is hypallergenic and helps to protect the white gold, whilst this is strong the rhodium wears away over time. Re-plating is a simple process that can be done to restore whiteness at any time.
Silver
Silver is one of the longest standing precious metals used in making jewellery. It's popular within jewellery as it is very malleable and more budget friendly. It is important to note, however, that silver will tarnish and scratch more easily than other metals.
Platinum
This is the most popular choice of metals due to its hardness, rarity and naturally white sheen that will never fade or change colour. This metal is heavy, strong and naturally hypoallergenic. Although platinum is highly scratch-resistant, surface marks can develop over time. These can easily be polished away to restore its finish.
Palladium
This is a precious white metal and part of the platinum family, popular for its natural white colour which does not tarnish or require replating. It's affordable in comparison to platinum and is a great low maintenance, durable metal. It is available in 950 (95% palladium and 5% other alloys) and 500 (50% palladium and 50% other alloys). Palladium 500 is a popular alternative to cutting the cost of a palladium ring. It will tarnish slightly over time but this can be polished up easily.
Other Popular Metals
We can also offer rings in Argentium (which is a modern tarnish resistant silver alloy), Titanium and Zirconium. We even offer rings made of rubber for those working in environments where they can't wear a metal ring but want to still wear one.
At Fennes Jewellery, we'll guide you through the advantages of each metal during your wedding ring consultation and help you choose a ring that complements your engagement ring, suits your lifestyle, and feels perfect for you and your partner.
Matching or Individual?
A question we are often asked is whether wedding rings should match.
The simple answer is no.
While some couples love the idea of matching rings, others choose styles that reflect their own personalities and lifestyles. What matters most is that each ring feels right for the person wearing it.
Your rings symbolise your commitment to one another, but they don’t have to be identical to tell your story.
Consider Your Lifestyle
Your wedding ring will be worn every day, so it's important to think about how it fits into your lifestyle.
If you work with your hands, enjoy outdoor activities, or lead an active lifestyle, durability may be a key consideration. Certain metals and finishes are better suited to everyday wear and can help your ring stay looking beautiful for years to come.
A Ring You’ll Love Forever
Trends come and go, but your wedding ring is something you’ll wear forever.
When choosing your ring, think about what genuinely feels like you. The most important thing isn’t what’s popular right now – it’s finding the ring you’ll still love years from now.
